The Hainault Roads club 25 mile two-up team time trial took
place last Sunday marking the end of the season for most racers.
Despite the light
rain in the morning, spirits remained undampened for what has become a classic on
the time trial calendar. The race started in Quendon, near the village of Ugley
in Essex, on the E1/25b course and saw a field of 33 teams, seven of which were
represented by the Hainault Roads Club themselves.
Strong gusting side winds made for less-than-ideal
conditions but some exceptional rides were recorded. Most notably by Mark "Pnut" Arnold and Nino Piccoli of API Metrow Silverhook
Chemicals winning the event in fifty four minutes and thirty two
seconds. The fastest Hainault team, and winners of the Hainault’s Argee Trophy,
were Howard Staunton and Mark Steers who crossed the line in 58.05 for seventh
place overall and also took the age category prize for a combined age of over
100 years.
The team of Chris Tomkins and Paul Gee were the next fastest
Hainault pair clocking 1:04.03. Brian Ward and Roger Pimm weren’t far behind
with their time of 1:05.14 closely followed by brothers Paul and Steve Godfrey
who stopped the clock in 1:07.31. Elliott Hayward and Matthew Smith put in a
fine performance to clock 1:13.39 with Chris Pimm and Patrick Smith next up in
1:20.14. Alistair Smith and Gary Hayward performed commendably in their first
team event to record a time of 1:24.04.
Four
racers from the Hainault Roads Club took part in Saturday’s ten mile time trial
promoted by the Eastern Counties Cycling Association on the famously quick E2
course near Newmarket.
