Hainault Road Club members held a 1 minutes silence at this Wednesdays evening 10 mile time trial series, as a mark of respect for Brian Ward who died last Thursday whilst out on his bike. Brian was 70 years old and from Ongar. He was the Club's Time Trial Secretary, and a very keen racer. Only the previous week, in the Club Evening 10 he had clocked 28 minutes and 13 seconds for the 10 mile course to finish 8th beating riders 55 years younger than him. The Saturday before that he had recorded 01:04:44 in the Veteran Time Trial Association 25 mile event to finish 42nd out of 116 riders.

In time trials racers are set off at 1 minute intervals correlating to their race numbers. This week, bib number 1 was not used and all the riders gathered around the start in silence in memory of Brian. The event was won by Howard Staunton in a time of 23:43, 7 seconds faster than series leader Rob Dulson. In third place Elliott Hayward, who is still coming to terms with his new bike, held off a strong ride by Mat Smith who finished 4th.

On Sunday Hainault's Hard Man Rob Dulson competed in the gruelling Essex Counties 100 mile Time Trail. The heat made for a very difficult ride but he still managed to post his second fastest 100 mile time of 4:00:50 only 50 seconds short of the very difficult 4 hour barrier which equates to a average speed of 25MPH.

It is with extreme sadness that I have to advise that Brian died today following an accident on his bike.

From what we understand he was coming down Coopersale Hill but swung wide and hit a van coming up the hill.

He was brought round by other riders from the club and went to hospital with a broken arm, broken shoulder and problems with his chest. However the police phoned Bill Godfrey later to say that he had died.

A more enthusiastic person and rider would be difficult to imagine and to think that many of us saw him racing only last night just seems incredible.

The club has lost a fine member and our thoughts go out to Barbara and all Brian's family.
